8 Playground Safety Tips, Plus Where to Go
Most playground injuries are preventable with a bit of preparation. Here are eight things worth doing, and playgrounds across four cities.

Playgrounds are among children's favourite places, and indoor and outdoor ones keep opening to meet the demand. This article covers how to keep a visit safe.
Play matters more to healthy growth than it's usually given credit for. Research shows active, creative children develop notably well, and play that links cognitive, social-emotional and sensorimotor experience creates an ideal environment for a child's brain to develop.
"Play is the work of the child," as Maria Montessori put it. If play is the work, then toys are the tools, and a playground is a very good tool indeed for an active child, because of how rich the play it offers is.
8 Playground Safety Tips
According to KidsHealth.Org, more than 200,000 children a year are treated for playground-related injuries. Most of those accidents are preventable with a bit of preparation and attention.
So what's worth paying attention to? Here are eight things.
1. Prepare Properly Before You Go
Make sure your child is in good health before setting out. Start with breakfast, because a playground uses a lot of energy. Take supplies with you too, snacks and a basic first-aid kit among them.
2. Dress Them Appropriately
Put your child in cotton or something else comfortable to move in. Avoid anything with cords or dangling decoration, which gets in the way and can catch.
A change of clothes is worth bringing. It means they go home clean.
3. Match the Equipment to Their Age
Playgrounds indoor and outdoor tend to have a lot of different equipment. It's worth knowing what's there and whether it suits your child's age.
Outdoor playgrounds usually cover a wider age range, so check the condition carefully. Whether a slide or a swing is properly maintained is something to look at yourself before your child gets on it.
Indoors it works differently, since all ages mix together. Asking staff which equipment suits your child is the quickest way through it.
4. Read the Rules
Every playground displays what is and isn't allowed. Indoors, children are usually required to wear non-slip socks, and a mask if needed.
Outdoors, put sunscreen on your child's face and body and get their footwear right. Keep them supervised throughout, and for anything outbound, leave the safety equipment to the professional technicians.
5. Watch How They Interact
Keep an eye on how your child gets on with other children and with the space around them. Talk to them about behaving well with others.
Equally important is how to behave in a public space. It keeps things calm, and your child learns what's expected somewhere shared.
6. No Eating While Playing
Plenty of playgrounds ban it, and it's a bad idea regardless. The main risk is choking, and playing straight after eating tends to make a child sick. Leave 30 minutes to an hour between eating and playing.
7. Play With Them
Beyond keeping them safe, playing alongside your child is worth the trip in itself. It's a shame to set aside the day and then spend it in the waiting area while they play alone.
Treat it as time together. That's the part a child actually remembers.
8. Pick the Right Time
The best time differs indoors and out. Indoors is fairly flexible, though earlier in the day before lunch is better, while everyone is still fresh.
Outdoors, go when the sun isn't at its strongest, late afternoon for instance. It's the more comfortable option and better for your child. With that covered, the next step is finding somewhere near you.
