What developmental milestones should my child hit at each age?
Between birth and age 6, children reach hundreds of milestones across motor skills (sitting, walking, fine motor), language (first words, sentences), cognitive skills (counting, puzzles), social-emotional development (empathy, cooperation), and self-care (dressing, eating). The timeline below is based on CDC "Learn the Signs. Act Early." guidelines and WHO Motor Development Milestones. Every child develops at their own pace, the ranges shown are norms, not strict deadlines.

When to seek advice
If your child has not reached most milestones in a given age band by the end of that period, speak with your paediatrician. Early intervention is most effective, developmental delays are easier to address when identified early.

Frequently Asked Questions
Developmental milestones are skills and behaviours that most children can do by a certain age. They cover physical motor skills, language, thinking (cognitive), social-emotional development, and self-care. Milestones help parents and doctors track whether a child's development is on track.
Not necessarily. Milestones are ranges, not exact deadlines. Some children reach milestones earlier, some later. If your child misses several milestones across multiple domains and is significantly behind the expected range, consult your paediatrician. One or two milestones being slightly late is usually normal.
By age 2, most children walk well, run (occasionally falling), use 50+ words and 2-word sentences, follow 2-step instructions, engage in simple pretend play, feed themselves with a spoon, and are beginning to show interest in potty training. See the 18–24 month and 2-year sections above for the full list.
The 5 domains are: (1) Motor skills, both gross motor (walking, jumping) and fine motor (holding a pencil, cutting); (2) Language & communication, understanding and speaking; (3) Cognitive development, thinking, problem-solving, memory; (4) Social-emotional development, relationships, empathy, emotional regulation; (5) Self-care & independence, eating, dressing, toileting.
Activities that match a child's developmental stage are most effective. For motor development: swimming, gymnastics, outdoor play. For cognitive and language: reading together, puzzles, coding classes. For social development: group classes, sports teams, play-based preschool. Use the Happy Kamper Activity Finder to browse verified classes by age and city.
A developmental delay means a child is significantly behind expected milestones in one or more domains. It is different from a developmental disorder (like autism spectrum disorder). A delay can often be addressed with early intervention therapy. If you notice consistent delays across multiple domains, speak with your paediatrician for a formal assessment.
