How do I know if my child is ready for school in Indonesia?

School readiness in Indonesia (whether for TK at age 4–5 or SD at age 6–7) is not just about knowing the alphabet or counting to 10. Early childhood educators consistently find that emotional maturity and social skills are the strongest predictors of a smooth start at school, more so than academic skills. This checklist covers all 5 readiness domains, physical, language, cognitive, social-emotional, and self-care, to give you a complete picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

In Indonesia, TK (Taman Kanak-kanak / kindergarten) typically accepts children aged 4–5 years. SD (Sekolah Dasar / primary school) starts at age 6–7. PAUD (Pendidikan Anak Usia Dini) covers early childhood education from birth to 6 years and includes both daycare and preschool programmes.

International early childhood educators consistently find that social-emotional readiness, specifically, the ability to separate from parents, follow instructions, take turns, and manage frustration, is the strongest predictor of a smooth first year at school. Academic skills like letter recognition matter less than emotional regulation at school entry.

Key signs include: can separate from parents without major upset, follows 2–3 step instructions, speaks in clear sentences, can sit still for 10–15 minutes, manages basic self-care (toilet, dressing, eating), plays cooperatively with other children, and shows curiosity about learning.

No, SD (primary school) in Indonesia teaches reading from Grade 1. Most SD programmes do not require pre-reading skills for entry. However, children who can recognise letters and their own name, and who enjoy being read to, tend to make faster progress in Grade 1. Focus on phonological awareness (rhyming, sound games) rather than formal reading before SD.

Activities that build readiness across all 5 domains: (1) Physical: swimming, gymnastics, playground time for gross motor; art and craft for fine motor. (2) Language: reading together daily, storytelling, language classes. (3) Cognitive: puzzles, counting games, coding for kids, science experiments. (4) Social-emotional: group play classes, PAUD/TK, team sports. (5) Self-care: involve children in dressing, packing bags, and tidying up.

A low score on one or two domains is common and does not mean your child is not ready for school. It gives you a targeted picture of where to focus. Use the activity recommendations shown at the bottom of the checklist to find classes that strengthen specific domains. If your child scores low across 3 or more domains and is approaching school age, consult with their current teacher or a developmental paediatrician.
