9 Free Places to Take Children in Jakarta

Jakarta has more free green space than its skyline suggests. Nine parks and playgrounds worth a weekend, with locations and opening hours.

9 Free Places to Take Children in Jakarta

If you're after free things to do with children in Jakarta, there's more available than most people expect. This is a run through the open spaces worth visiting.

Jakarta is known for its towers and its malls, but behind that it holds a good number of child-friendly places, free playgrounds among them. A weekend out with the family needn't cost anything.

Free Parks and Playgrounds in Jakarta

1. Tebet Eco Park

First is Tebet Eco Park, a park in the middle of Jakarta revitalised into 7.3 hectares of green space. Two previously separate parks, Taman Tebet Selatan and Taman Tebet Utara, were joined together in the process.

Opened in 2022, it has eight zones, among them a Forest Buffer of old shade trees, a Wetland Boardwalk that manages standing water, and a Children Playground. The playground is free and generously sized, with several separate play areas. Beyond the playground you can jog the other zones together, and it's a good spot for a picnic.

Location: Tebet Eco Park, Jl. Tebet Barat Raya, RT.1/RW.10, Jakarta Selatan 12820

Opening hours: 07.00 - 17.00

Tip: free as it is, Tebet Eco Park caps daily visitors, at a maximum of 5,000 at weekends. Book a slot through the JAKI app before you go.

2. One Satrio Playground

If you want somewhere you can sit with a coffee while your child plays, One Satrio is the one. It's among the more popular spots in Jakarta at the moment. Sitting right among the skyscrapers, it offers cool open space with a good range of facilities, and access is free.

There's plenty to do without spending anything, from a jogging track to a playground built with comfort and safety in mind, and a Pet Park if you've brought the dog. There are enough tenants to sit out an afternoon over coffee and watch the sunset while your child plays.

Location: CBD, Jl. Mega Kuningan Jl. Prof. DR. Satrio No.Kav. E 1, RT.5/RW.3, Kuningan, Karet Kuningan, Kecamatan Setiabudi, Kota Jakarta Selatan, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta 12949.

Opening hours: daily, 08.00 - 22.00

3. Urban Forest Cipete

Next is Urban Forest Cipete, a green space in the Cipete area of South Jakarta. It's built around the idea of a garden at home, and it works well as somewhere to step out of the routine for an afternoon.

The green is dense and genuinely restful, with plenty of food tenants and cafes, a play area for children and a pet playground. The interiors lean heavily on wood, which is a large part of why people stay longer than they meant to.

Location: Urban Forest Cipete, Jl. RS. Fatmawati Raya No.45, Cilandak Bar., Kec. Cilandak, Kota Jakarta Selatan, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta 12430

Opening hours: daily, 07.00 - 22.00

4. Taman Puring

Taman Puring is another free option for a weekend with the family. It was revitalised in 2019 into green space with a lot of shade trees and good air circulation, and it draws mostly from the surrounding neighbourhoods.

At 13,000 square metres it holds a jogging track, a cycle path, seating, children's play equipment including slides, a skate park and even a parkour area. There are public toilets, and the park is smoke-free, so it's a comfortable place for an early-morning session with a child.

Location: Jl. Kyai Maja No.7, RT.13/RW.1, Kramat Pela, Kec. Kby. Baru, Kota Jakarta Selatan, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta 12120

Opening hours: 06.00 - 17.00

5. Taman Sambas Asri

Jakarta has a good deal of open space, and this is another of it. Taman Sambas Asri was renovated in 2022 and has become a popular choice for anyone wanting to spend time outdoors with friends and family. It's smaller than the others here, but it has what visitors actually want, an area set aside for older people, a children's playground, a family area and a sports pitch.

The location helps too, close to the food around Panglima Polim. Worth adding to a weekend list.

Location: Jl. Panglima Polim, RT.2/RW.5, Kramat Pela, Kec. Kby. Baru, Kota Jakarta Selatan, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta 12130

Opening hours: 06.00 - 17.00

6. Taman Kenanga Indah Cilandak Timur

Another free playground worth trying is Taman Kenanga Indah, close to 3,000 square metres and sitting in the middle of a residential area in Cilandak Timur. You don't need to be local to use it. The children's area is clean and well kept, and there's bicycle parking and a sports pitch that local groups use.

Location: Jl. NIS No.4, RT.4/RW.3, Cilandak Tim., Ps. Minggu, Kota Jakarta Selatan, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta 12560

Opening hours: daily, 06.00 - 18.00

7. Taman Kumbang Sereh

Next is Taman Kumbang Sereh, and the facilities here are not modest. There's a children's play area with modern slides of the sort you'd normally find in a mall, a jogging track, a bike pumptrack and a large sports pitch.

It even has an amphitheatre. Well worth it for a day outdoors with the family.

Location: Jl irigasi kampung Jl. Bulak Sere No.001, RT.7, Pegadungan, Kec. Kalideres, Kota Jakarta Barat, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta 11830

Opening hours: daily, 06.30 - 18.30

8. CIBIS Park

Anyone in South Jakarta will know this one. CIBIS Park is open space in Pasar Minggu with no entry charge.

Sitting in an office district, it's a favourite with office workers and locals alike for an evening or a weekend. Inside there's an artificial lake, gardens and a jogging track.

As open space it gets used by community groups for gymnastics and yoga, skateboarding, content-creator meetups and food events. Plenty of families come to sit by the lake in the afternoon and feed the fish, though fish food has to be bought from the management.

Location: Jl TB Simatupang No 2, Cilandak Timur, Pasar Minggu, Jakarta Selatan, Jakarta, Indonesia 12650

Opening hours: daily, 08.00 - 22.00

9. Orange Grove PIK 2

Pantai Indah Kapuk 2 has another destination in Orange Groves, which went viral quickly on the strength of the place itself. It's green open space built around family recreation. Beyond a cool afternoon and good views, the food and the attractions are what make it worth the trip.

There's more to do than eat and look, too. There's a pottery experience, personalised fragrance craft and DIY Smooch sessions, and for something gentler you can take a pedal boat or a kayak around the lake.

Location: Jl. KH Mas Mansyur, Salembaran, Kec. Kosambi, Kabupaten Tangerang, Banten 15214

Opening hours: daily, 08.00 - 23.00
