Kids Activities in Surabaya, What to Book by Area
Surabaya's weekly children's classes cluster on the west side of the city and, less densely, on the east, while the far north and the south hold one listing each. Most prices are attached to a session or a pack rather than to a month, and where a listing publishes both, a new student pays more than a continuing one.

Where in Surabaya do the weekly classes actually sit?
Start with the map rather than with the activity. A weekly class is a drive you will make again every week for a whole term, and in Surabaya that drive is what decides whether the booking survives past the second month.
Read the Surabaya listing by area rather than by category and the shape is immediate. The largest group by a clear margin sits on the west side of the city, through Sambikerep, Lakarsantri, Wiyung, Tandes, Sukomanunggal and Dukuh Pakis. A second and smaller group sits on the east, through Mulyorejo, Rungkut, Gunung Anyar and Tenggilis Mejoyo.
Between the two, the middle of the city carries a handful of doors, and the far north and the south carry close to nothing. For a parent choosing something regular, that map is the real starting point.
The west, the east, and the two sides with almost nothing
On the west the doors are spread out rather than stacked together. Sambikerep and the Citraland edge carry language teaching, Lakarsantri and Wiyung carry fitness, skating and early years, Tandes carries the computer and coding end, and Dukuh Pakis carries music, dance and child development.
The east is tighter. Mulyorejo and the Kalisari streets around it hold play venues, dance and art within a few minutes of each other, and Rungkut adds painting, piano and a child development clinic. If you live out there the cluster is small, but it is genuinely close together.
The middle of the city is thin and oddly concentrated. Tegalsari carries swimming, Genteng carries a reading and numeracy centre, and a single mall on the Kapas Krampung side holds three separate businesses at one address, which is an area of a sort but not the sort a map would show you.
The north and the south are where padding would begin, so it is worth saying plainly. Each of them holds one listing. A parent living on either side should plan to drive west or east rather than expect to find something local.
Does a thin area mean there is nothing there?
No, and this is worth checking before you give up on your own neighbourhood. The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education publishes a reference register of non formal education units for Kota Surabaya, broken out kecamatan by kecamatan, with a column for kursus.
On that register the densest kecamatan in the city is Gubeng, with 34 registered course providers, followed by Sukolilo with 28. Both sit on the eastern and central side of Surabaya, and neither is where our own listing is deepest. Dukuh Pakis, with 25, is the one place where the register and the listing agree with each other.
Two kecamatan on that register carry no registered course provider at all, Benowo and Bulak, and Kenjeran, Simokerto and Asemrowo carry a single one each. Those are the parts of the city where thin is not an artefact of any one directory.
So treat a gap in one listing as a gap in that listing. A swimming club, a play venue or a private coach would not appear on the ministry register either, and a small neighbourhood kursus may never have listed itself online at all.
What does a monthly fee in Surabaya actually cover?
Usually less than you would assume, and very often it is not a monthly fee in the first place. Most listed prices in Surabaya are attached to one session or to a pack of sessions bought up front, and only a minority are attached to a month.
That distinction matters more than the figure beside it. A session price stops the moment you stop turning up, while a pack and a monthly fee are a commitment you have already made. The second shape suits a child who has tried the thing and asked to go back, and it punishes a booking made on a hunch.
Then there is what the headline number hides. On the Surabaya listings that publish both, the price quoted to a new student and the price quoted to a continuing student are two different numbers, and the new one is the larger. Some name the difference openly as a registration charge, and others fold registration, and sometimes a course book, into the first payment and present the whole thing as a single price.
So the number to compare between two centres in different areas is not the one on the advertisement. Ask what a continuing student pays from the second term, and ask what sits inside the first payment that will not be in the next one. Working the full termly figure out before you commit is what the cost calculator is for.
One further line sits outside the fee on the play and open session side, where several listings carry a different price at the weekend from the one they carry midweek. If Saturday is the only day you can get there, that is the price that applies to you.
The figures on each listing are prices the businesses have published rather than quotes for today. Confirm the current one with the centre before you pay anything, and ask at the same time which of them is the new student price.
Trials here are bought rather than given
Trial availability is carried on each individual listing rather than being a city norm, and none of the Surabaya listings currently shows one. Do not assume a trial is waiting for you because the same category offers them in another city.
What Surabaya has instead is the trial sold as a product. At least one centre here lists a trial session with a price on it, which is a fair exchange and a far better guide than a phone call.
Where neither exists, a centre that sells by the single session has effectively given you a trial at cost. That is the practical use of a session price, and it is the reason to read the unit on the price tag before going hunting for a free class.
Whichever way you get in the door, one session tells you about the room, the instructor and the drive. It will not tell you about the curriculum, so use it for the first three.
How far is too far for a weekly class?
Further than it looks on a map, and this is where a weekly booking quietly fails. The TomTom Traffic Index put the average speed during the evening rush hour in Surabaya at 17.5 km per hour in its most recent full year of data.
At that speed the same index records a ten kilometre drive in the evening rush at just over 34 minutes. A class on the far side of the city at five in the afternoon is most of an hour each way, before parking, before the class itself, and before whatever you were going to cook afterwards.
That is the argument for choosing the area before choosing the activity. A good centre twenty minutes away that your child attends every week beats an excellent one an hour away that they attend for a month.
If the category you want turns out to be one door deep on your side of the city, it is better to know that before your child has settled on it. The activity finder filters by age and category across the whole city rather than by name.
Checks worth making before you pay for a term
Get the term written down before the first payment. How many sessions it contains, what happens to a session your child misses, whether anything is refundable and in what circumstances, and who actually teaches the class are all cheap to ask in advance and expensive to argue about later.
Ask the two price questions from earlier as one question. What does a continuing student pay, and what is inside this first payment that will not be inside the next one.
If a centre presents itself as a registered kursus, it should be findable on the ministry register for its own kecamatan. An absence there only means something for a provider that claims the registration, because a club, a venue or a private coach is a different kind of business altogether.
The full set of Surabaya listings, each with its area, listed price and age band, is on the Surabaya activity listing. The city's free parks and museums are carried separately, under a free activities entry rather than as individual businesses.
