What Kids Actually Learn in a Roblox Studio Coding Class
No. Roblox Studio is a separate free app for Windows and Mac, and the code inside it is Luau, a text language derived from Lua 5.1. A class teaches 3D building, scripting and publishing. Buy it for the skill, not for better school grades, and set the account up first.
Is a Roblox Coding Class Just Playing Games?
The suspicion is reasonable, and it usually comes from watching the same screen for two years. But the class does not happen inside the game. It happens in Roblox Studio, a separate application Roblox describes as free to use, built to do four things, which are build, script, test and publish.
The code a child writes there is Luau. Roblox's own documentation calls it a fast, small, safe, gradually typed embeddable scripting language, derived from Lua 5.1, and you can read the Luau documentation on Roblox's creator site.
That answers the whole question. Lua is a general-purpose language used far outside Roblox, and Luau is typed, so your child meets variables, functions, brackets and error messages rather than coloured blocks.
One consequence is worth checking before you pay for anything. Roblox publishes Studio as a desktop application for Windows and Mac, with a stated minimum of around 3 GB of memory, and lists no tablet or phone version. A child who plays Roblox on a phone cannot do the coursework on that phone.
The Three Things the Class Actually Teaches
Roblox publishes its own teaching path in three chapters, which is useful because a competent class follows roughly the same arc and you can hold a brochure up against it. The first chapter is building.
A child creates a project, makes an environment with terrain, and greyboxes a playable area, meaning they block out the shape of a level before it looks like anything. That is spatial design work, closer to architecture than to typing.
The second chapter is where the programming lives, and it is the one to ask about. Roblox's named lessons are creating a coin collection mechanic, recording and displaying player data, creating player hazards, and scripting an upgrade button.
Strip the game language away and those are variables, conditionals, event handling and storing state between sessions. A coin that vanishes when touched and adds one to a score is the same logic a shopping cart uses.
The third chapter is polish, meaning visual effects, global lighting and finished assets. Parents tend to dismiss it, and it decides whether a child ever shows anyone what they made.
Worth knowing before you compare prices: Roblox states that it offers free software and curriculum to teach students of all ages computer science, digital citizenship and entrepreneurship. The material is not what a class is selling.
Will It Make My Child Better at School?
Probably not, and it is better to hear that now than to feel let down two terms later. The largest study of this question pooled 105 separate studies and 539 measured effects, and you can read the meta-analysis by Scherer, Siddiq and Sanchez Viveros in the Journal of Educational Psychology in full. Its headline looks encouraging, an overall transfer effect of g = 0.49, with far transfer at g = 0.47.
The number that matters sits in the moderator analysis. When children who learned to program were compared with children given another structured activity, rather than with children doing nothing in particular, far transfer fell to g = 0.15.
The apparent benefit was mostly the benefit of doing something organised at all. The same paper states that school achievement and literacy benefited the least of everything measured.
The fair claim is narrow and still worth money. A child in a Roblox class gets better at programming, and at the habit of finding out why something broke.
They do not get a general upgrade, and a centre promising sharper maths is selling what the research does not support. Our guide to what Scratch and Python actually teach works through the same evidence for block coding.
What Do Indonesia's New Rules Mean for Your Child's Roblox Account?
This is the part no class brochure will raise, and it changed twice this year. In March 2026 the government issued Peraturan Menteri Komunikasi dan Digital Nomor 9 Tahun 2026, the implementing rule for Peraturan Pemerintah Nomor 17 Tahun 2025, the child-protection regulation known as PP Tunas.
Roblox is named on the list of platforms that rule automatically classifies as high risk, alongside the large social networks, and accounts held by children under 16 on such platforms are restricted, phased in from late March. Minister Meutya Hafid announced it as the ministerial rule flowing down from PP Tunas.
Roblox answered in May 2026, with Indonesia among the first countries to receive it, by splitting young accounts in two. A Roblox Kids account, for ages 5 to 12, reaches only experiences rated Minimal or Mild, has every communication feature off by default, and lets a parent block or approve individual games.
A Roblox Select account, for 13 to 15, adds Moderate content and allows chat only with contacts a parent has approved. A child moves from Kids to Select on turning 13. Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman described the aim as making sure children in Indonesia reach only appropriate content from their first play.
Every account held by someone under 16 in Indonesia now needs verified parental consent. Without it, chat and anything rated Moderate or above stays closed.
Age is checked by facial age estimation, and Roblox states that its processor for those images is Persona and that the images are deleted after processing. If the estimate is wrong, a parent with a linked account can correct the child's age once only.
The consent is yours to give, not the centre's. Sort it out before the first session, or week one disappears into admin.
Park the Money Question Before You Enrol
Children arrive at these classes having heard that people get rich making Roblox games, so it helps to know the thresholds before that expectation sets. Roblox states that creators who are 13 or older and have earned at least 30,000 Earned Robux can convert them to money through the Developer Exchange, or DevEx.
The published rate is 38 US dollars per ten thousand Robux, and creators keep 70% of what they sell for Robux inside their own experience. A child under 13 cannot cash out at all, whatever they build.
The earnings figure Roblox does publicise covers its top 1,000 creators, who averaged more than a million US dollars last year. There is no comparable published average for everyone else, which is the most informative thing about it.
None of that argues against the class. It argues for buying it as a craft lesson rather than an investment.
What Should You Ask Before Paying?
Five questions separate a teaching centre from a supervised play session. What will my child have built by the last week, and can they explain it to me?
A specific answer, such as an obstacle course with a working score and a shop, is a curriculum. Logical thinking and future-ready skills is a sales page.
How much of each session is spent scripting rather than playing? Some play is legitimate, because you cannot design a level without testing it. A session that is mostly testing is a games club with a fee.
Which computer, and where does the work live? Studio needs Windows or Mac, so ask whether machines are supplied and how a project is saved between weeks. A child who loses three weeks of building does not come back next term.
Does the centre know the Indonesian account rules? Anyone who cannot say what a Roblox Select account is allowed to do has not been watching the market they teach in.
What happens when a child gets stuck? This is the whole product. Roblox gives the curriculum away, so what you pay for is pace, feedback and an adult who notices a stuck child within minutes rather than at the end.
If you are still weighing options, the activity listings for Jakarta show what local centres run and charge, and the free activities listings are a cheap way to test whether the interest survives a real class. Our post on STEM education for kids in Indonesia sets out where game design sits among the other options.
Key Takeaways
A Roblox class is not the game. It runs in Roblox Studio, a free Windows and Mac application, and the language is Luau, derived from Lua 5.1. The programming a child actually meets is variables, conditionals, events and saved state, dressed as coins, hazards and upgrade buttons.
The evidence does not support buying a coding class for better school results. Far transfer drops to g = 0.15 once the comparison children are also doing something structured, and school achievement benefited least of all. In Indonesia an under-16 account now needs verified parental consent, and the account type follows age, with Roblox Kids covering 5 to 12 and Roblox Select covering 13 to 15.
Earning is gated at 13 years old and 30,000 Earned Robux, so treat it as distant rather than the point. Roblox publishes its curriculum free, so judge a class on teaching, class size and what your child can build and explain at the end.
