Music and Dance Classes for Children in Bandung: What to Check Before You Pay for a Term

Bandung's children's music and dance schools are listed below with their area, age band and listed price. Between them they run piano, vocal, instruments, ballet and modern dance, and they bill in three different units, so settle which unit you are buying before you compare one fee against another.

Music and Dance Classes for Children in Bandung: What to Check Before You Pay for a Term

Which part of Bandung is the class actually in?

A weekly class you have to cross the city for is the class your child stops attending in week six, and the addresses on this list are spread far enough that this is the first thing to check. They run from Sarijadi and Sukasari in the north-west, through Sumur Bandung and Bandung Wetan in the centre, out to Bandung Kulon in the west, and one of them sits in Margaasih, which is outside the city boundary and inside the regency that surrounds it.

So read the street before you read the word Bandung. A studio that looks ten minutes away on a map is a different proposition at five on a weekday, and the difference decides whether the second half of a term happens.

The practical version of this is to pick the two or three addresses on your own side of the city first, and only then compare what they teach. Choosing the school first and discovering the commute afterwards is the more common order, and it is the one that produces a half-used package.

The syllabus a school teaches to sets the age, not the school

Where a school examines its pupils through a named board, that board decides when graded work can begin. The two boards behind most children's classes here answer that question very differently, and the gap between them is widest for the youngest children.

On the dance side, the Royal Academy of Dance sets a minimum age for every graded level: five for Pre-Primary in Dance, six for Primary in Dance, seven for Grades 1 to 5 and eleven for Grades 6 to 8, and a candidate has to have reached that age by the end of the year in which they sit the exam. A three-year-old in a ballet class is therefore doing pre-syllabus movement, which is the right thing for a three-year-old to be doing, and is not the start of a graded ladder.

On the music side, Trinity College London sets no minimum age for its graded exams at all, and no prerequisite either. A pupil may enter at any grade without having taken the ones below it, and Grades 6 to 8 carry no theory requirement. So a music school naming Trinity is telling you about the route it offers rather than about when your child may start.

The useful question at a first visit is therefore not which board a school uses but what it will do with your child for the first year, before any of this applies. A school that can describe that year without reaching for the word syllabus usually has thought about it.

Who will actually teach your child each week?

Small music and dance schools are built around individual teachers, and a change of teacher is felt far more by a seven-year-old than a change of room is. Some of the listings below name the teacher in the class title, which is a useful signal that the school expects you to care about the answer.

Ask who takes the class week to week, and who covers it when that person cannot. Ask it before the trial rather than after, because the trial is often taught by whoever is free that day, and you want to know whether the person in front of you is the person you are buying.

Group and private classes differ on this more than on price. A private slot is a relationship with one teacher; a group class survives a teacher changing but gives your child less of whoever is teaching. Both are on this list, and the choice between them is worth making deliberately rather than by whichever had an opening.

Three billing units, and only one of them is a monthly fee

The businesses below do not price the same thing. Some publish a figure for a single session, some publish a recurring monthly figure, and several sell a voucher covering a block of sessions, so two numbers side by side are not comparable until you know what each one buys.

For a per-session figure, ask how many sessions a term runs to. For a monthly figure, ask how many sessions a month contains in a month with a public holiday in it. For a voucher, ask two things: how many sessions it covers, and when it expires.

The expiry is the one that catches people. A block bought in the enthusiasm of the first month has to be used inside a window, and a child who is ill for a fortnight can lose a third of it. Ask what happens to a session missed with notice, and get the answer in writing before you pay rather than after you need it.

Every price shown against a business on the list is a figure that business has published, not a quote for your child on the day you enquire. Treat it as the starting point for a conversation, and confirm the current figure and what it includes before you transfer anything.

Can you judge these by their ratings?

Not yet. One of the ten businesses below carries enough reviews for a rating to be shown at all, which means the ranking you are looking at is not a popularity order and should not be read as one.

That is normal for this kind of business in a city this size, and it puts the weight back on the trial. A single session you attend tells you more about whether a class suits your child than any number of reviews from families whose child is not yours.

What you can read off the list instead is concrete: the area, the age band the business itself publishes, what it teaches and what it charges for. Those are the things worth shortlisting on.

Five questions to settle before the first payment

Which address are my sessions at, and does that hold for the whole block. Who teaches the class week to week, and who covers it when they cannot.

What unit am I buying, and how many sessions does it contain. If it expires, when. What happens to a session my child misses with notice.

Send all five in one message before you pay. The answers take a school a few minutes and they are the part you will want to re-read in six months, which is more than can be said for the price list.

The Bandung activity listing carries the address, the age band and the listed price for each of these businesses, so you can cut the list down to a shortlist on geography before you write to anyone. If you are still working out what a year of classes would cost your household rather than which school to use, the cost calculator is the better place to start.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age can a child start music or dance classes in Bandung?+
Earlier than most parents expect. The age bands the businesses below publish start at one for the youngest music classes, three and four for the first dance and group music classes, and five or six where a school begins structured instrument teaching. One academy on the list does not open until eight. So the question is usually not whether your child is old enough but which of these age bands they would actually sit inside once they arrived.
How much do children's music and dance classes in Bandung cost?+
It depends on the unit a business charges in rather than on what it teaches. Some of the businesses below price a single session, some price a month, and several sell a voucher covering a block, so the figures are not comparable until you know how many sessions each one covers. The listed price and its unit are shown against each business on the Bandung activity listing, and every figure is one the business has published rather than a quote for today.
When can a child take a graded ballet or music exam?+
It depends entirely on the board. The Royal Academy of Dance sets a minimum age for every graded ballet level, five for Pre-Primary in Dance and six for Primary in Dance, rising to seven for Grades 1 to 5, and the candidate has to have reached it by the end of the year in which they sit the exam. Trinity College London sets no minimum age for its graded music exams and no prerequisite, so a pupil may enter at any grade without having taken the ones below it.
How do I know a class will suit my child before paying for a term?+
Sit in on one session, and ask in advance whether the person teaching it is the person who would teach the class afterwards. A trial taught by a stand-in tells you about the room rather than about the teaching. Watch how the teacher handles the child who is struggling that day rather than the one who is doing well, because that is the situation your child will be in at some point in the term.
