Kids Activities in Bandung, Area by Area

Bandung's best known children's venues sit north of the city in the Lembang and Dago hills, and they sell entry by the visit. The classes that run every week sit down in the city districts, and they are sold by the session or in voucher packs far more often than by the month.

Kids Activities in Bandung, Area by Area

Where in Bandung do the weekly classes actually sit?

Ask almost anyone for children's activities in Bandung and you will get the same handful of names, nearly all of them north of the city on the roads up towards Dago and Lembang. They are good places, and every one of them sells a ticket for one visit.

That is the right product for a family coming up for a weekend. It is the wrong product for a parent who wants their child in the same room every Saturday until the term ends.

The listings that do that job sit somewhere else. They are down in the city districts, in shophouse units and studios, and they rarely appear on anyone's list of things to do in Bandung.

The dense middle, and the clusters around it

The weekly supply is concentrated in the central districts, which is where the listing has the most doors within a short drive of each other. Bandung Wetan and Sumur Bandung, taking in the streets around Braga, Citarum and Purnawarman, hold the largest group in the listing, and they carry music, dance and coding.

North west of that, Sukasari, Sukajadi and Cidadap form a second cluster running out along Setraduta, Sarijadi and Hegarmanah. It is thinner than the middle, and it is where much of the music and language teaching sits.

The west, around Bandung Kulon, Babakan Ciparay and the Holis corridor, holds a third and smaller group covering early years and ballet. Everything else is scattered rather than clustered, and that is worth knowing before you assume there is something near you.

Which areas and categories are thin?

It is worth saying the thin parts out loud, because padding them is how a city guide stops being useful. South and east Bandung, from Buah Batu across to Gedebage and Panyileukan, carries very little, and a parent living there should expect to drive towards the centre rather than find something local.

Kabupaten Bandung is not so much thin as scattered. What is out at Margaasih, Bojongsoang and Lengkong is real, but the entries sit a long way apart, which matters far more for a weekly commitment than for a single visit.

Some categories are one door deep across the whole city. Where that happens the choice is not between providers but between taking the one that exists or choosing a different activity, and it is better to know that before your child has settled on something.

What does the fee cover, and what is it a fee for?

Most listed prices in Bandung are attached to a session or to a voucher pack bought up front, and only a small number are attached to a month. That distinction matters more than the figure next to it.

A per session fee stops the moment you stop turning up. A voucher pack and a monthly fee do not, and they are not worse for that, because they suit a child who has already tried the thing and asked to go back.

So ask what sits outside the fee. Equipment, an exam or grading fee, a costume for a recital and a joining charge at the start of term are all billed separately by some centres and rolled in by others, and a listing rarely says which. Working the real termly cost out before you commit is what the cost calculator is for.

The figures on each listing are prices the businesses have published rather than quotes for today. Treat them as a starting point and confirm the current one with the centre before you pay.

Trials are scarce here, so plan around it

Trial availability is carried per provider on each listing, and in Bandung only a couple of listings currently show one. Do not assume a trial exists because the same category offers them elsewhere.

Where there is no trial, the nearest equivalent is a single session bought on its own, which is another reason to read the unit on the price tag before going looking for a free one. A centre that sells by the session has effectively given you a trial at cost.

Where a trial does exist it is usually a single session, and one session tells you about the room, the instructor and the drive rather than about the curriculum. Use it for the first three.

What should you check before committing to a term?

If a centre presents itself as a registered kursus, it should be findable. The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education publishes a reference register of non formal education units for Kota Bandung, broken out district by district, with a column for kursus alongside community learning centres. A swimming club, a play venue or a private coach is a different kind of business and would not appear there, so an absence only means something for a provider that claims the registration.

Get the terms written down before the first payment. How many sessions the term contains, what happens to a session your child misses, whether the fee can be refunded and in what circumstances, and who actually teaches the class are all cheap to ask in advance and expensive to argue about afterwards.

Indonesia's consumer protection law, UU 8/1999, gives a buyer the right to redress when a service does not match what was agreed, and sets that redress as a refund or a replacement service of equivalent value, to be given within seven days of the transaction date. That right is far easier to rely on when what was agreed exists in writing.

Matching the area to the commitment

The rule that falls out of all this is short. Something you will do every week belongs in your own cluster, and something you will do once or twice belongs wherever it is best, including up the hill.

The hills and the city are not really competing with each other. They answer different questions, and the common mistake is booking a term at the distance you would happily drive for a day out.

The full set of Bandung listings, each with its area, listed price and age band, is on the Bandung activity listing. If the category you want turns out to be one door deep, the activity finder filters by age and category across the whole city rather than by name.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which part of Bandung has the most children's classes?+
The central districts hold the largest group in the listing. Bandung Wetan and Sumur Bandung, covering the streets around Braga, Citarum and Purnawarman, carry the most doors within a short drive of each other, with a second cluster north west through Sukasari, Sukajadi and Cidadap. South and east Bandung, and Kabupaten Bandung, are much thinner and more scattered.
Do children's activity centres in Bandung offer trial classes?+
Only a small number do. Trial availability is carried on each individual listing rather than being standard across the city, so check the listing itself rather than assuming one exists. Where there is no trial, a centre that sells by the session is the nearest equivalent, because a single session can be bought on its own without committing to a term.
What is usually not included in a Bandung class fee?+
Equipment, an exam or grading fee, a costume or kit for a recital, and a joining charge at the start of term are the four that most often sit outside the class fee. Some centres roll them in and some bill them separately, and the listing rarely says which, so ask before the first payment rather than after it.
How do I check whether a Bandung course provider is registered?+
For a provider that presents itself as a registered kursus, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education publishes a reference register of non formal education units for Kota Bandung, broken out by district. A swimming club, a play venue or a private coach is a different kind of business and would not be listed there, so an absence from that register only tells you something about a provider claiming the registration.
